Those who expect to reap the
blessings of freedom, must, like men,
undergo the fatigue of supporting it.

My Mother and I made this quilt
in 2004 while our son Alex
was deployed in Iraq with the
Missouri National Guard.
It helped to pass the time.
We searched for just the right
fabrics.

The tans represent the hot desert
sand. Top temperature that year
was a 130 degrees.
The vehicles represent the long
dangerous hours spent searching
for road side bombs.
The red with stars represent the
American flag, that every soldier
pledges to protect.
It's difficult when a loved one
is so far away and might not
come home.
Alex returned safely.
That year 849 did not.
Please remember those who so
selflessly serve our country to
preserve our Independence and
the families that endure
their absence.
Happy Birthday
America!

Have a wonderful, free and appreciative 4th of July! Eat apple pie, watch fireworks and hug someone you love!
ReplyDeleteBest regards ! Alena
Thank-you for this post. It touches my heart because my daughter was also in Iraq. My daughter, like your son, returned home safely. She has served two tours of duty, one as a Private and the other as Staff Sergeant and is still in the Army.
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is truly amazing. Did you give it to your son?
PS I just happened to be reading your post and noticed I was the winner. I can't believe it. Thank-you.
Tell your son for me that I am grateful for his duty served in Iraq and am happy he is home safe.

Bethann, Congrats on winning the beeswax cabin! E-mail your address to me & I will send it your way.
DeleteI was touched by your comment. I know you must be very proud of your daughter. As a soldier Mother, I understand the difficulties you and your family have been through. Please tell your daughter that her service to our country is much appreciated by our family and to stay safe!
Alex liked the quilt, but thought it should be given to his son or daughter........still waiting for that to happen.
Congratulation to Bethann for the win of the beeswax cabin!
DeleteSherri lovely post and beautiful tribute to your son and every soldier who is now and have served for us and our country!
Your quilts are delightful!
Happy 4th to you and your family.

God bless Alex. He was one of the lucky ones. The quilt is stunning and is an amazing tribute to your son and to all who have served in the wars in the Middle East. (Didn't mean to sound almost like what Carolyn posted but it is so true!)
ReplyDeleteI try to remember to pray for those in military.
Your dolls are so very precious. I am in MAIDA too.
My oldest brother has built log homes for many years now. I love your sweet cabin!
