Hitty's Room Box

The last time I posted about
Hitty's room box it was ready to
paint and wallpaper.
The hub's trimmed the box
in walnut.  He even made a
top that slides off and on
for easy access.
 He fashioned her walnut furniture
from the illustrations in the book.
Her sea chest is pine painted
a bright marine blue.
 I embroidered her name
on her hand stitched undies.
If you are familiar with the
book "Hitty, Her First Hundred
Years" you may recall she lived
for several years with Mr. Farley
a portrait artist.  He had a dress
made to replace her tattered one.
Hitty describes it as plain with
a single china button on the back.
So, I made a simple brown dress.
The hubs and I decided on
wallpaper with little clipper ships
for the top of the room and paint
for the bottom half and outside
of the room.
Fitting the trim.
 Gluing it tightly together.
The hub's busy in the work shop.
A shelf with pegs for
Hitty's dresses and a
double shelf for her
belongings.
A new base for the feather Christmas
tree that was too tall for the room.
When the hubs was making Shaker
boxes he made several very tiny
ones that have made their way into
dollhouse rooms, including Hitty's.
Not long after the hubs finished
this room, he had cataract surgery.
Long story short, he had
complications with both eyes
and over the past year his vision
has deteriorated.  Another reason
for my prolonged absence.  The hubs
comes first.
During that time he made a
third room for the double decker
and a couple other projects that
will be future posts.
The hubs continues to work in
his shop, he just makes big things
he can see, like bookcases.
I send out a big "thank you" to
Steve (yes, the hubs has a name)
for all the hard work, generous time
and enthusiasm he has had in
the dollhouse department!
He is one in a million and I'm
a lucky gal.
Hitty thanks her Mr. Farley too.

  1. Wonderful. Your husband is a treasure. Hitty is sweet and her new home is grand. I am sorry your husband has a problem with his eyes, but making the bigger things is good too. He sure has done a wonderful job on all that he has made you. This little Hitty has it all thanks to you and Steve. Love everything.

    1. Thank you Martha. You have been a busy, busy doll maker! I love all the dolls you have made (my favorite are the boys and Miss Vestal) and enjoyed watching the videos of you past dolls. The bonnets and shoes and clothing are especially nice. Your home renovations look so bright, organized and cozy. Steve had another appt. with the eye specialist yesterday. He is headed for laser surgery and a possible re do of the cataract surgery in one eye. But, we are hopeful for a possible outcome that will improve his vision. I look forward to your future posts!

  2. Your hub's has quite the wood shop. His craftsmanship is amazing. I enjoy seeing all his work. I am sorry to hear about his eye sight; so happy he is still able to do wood projects even if they are on a larger scale. Your Hitty doll home box is wonderful. You both did a great job designing and decorating. Happy you are back posting...I am away from blogging for now...I guess I need a time out. But I still look at other blogs and leave comments. I look forward to all your future posting. Welcome back...you were missed.

  4. Your, oh-so-sweet, little Hitty's Mr. Farley has to be her Hero of the Day. Why, just look at all he has done for her. Who wouldn't love their own hand-made pieces of furniture gracing their lovely home. Of course, Mrs. Farley hasn't exactly been idle either. All of you must be feeling pretty good at the way this project has come together. Mr. Farley's latest project, the bookcases, are fantastic. Lucky whoever ends up with these!

  7. Sherri, I was so sorry to read that your husband has had trouble with his eyes after the surgery. I guess since I got along so well I figured everybody else did too. Hopefully this surgery he'll have will be successful.

Now, I want to thank you for introducing me to room boxes. For years I've wanted a doll house, which I doubt I'll ever have, but I love looking at yours and seeing all the decorations and the precious furniture. Last night I found, by accident, a blog about minis and room boxes. I'll see if I can find it again and send the link to you.

    1. Hen,
unfortunately Steve had problems with both eyes. It is on going. He has an appointment next week, hopefully for some laser surgery. If that doesn't help he will probably have surgery again! Room boxes make a great little dollhouse and I'm so glad you enjoy them.
