Missouri Town 1855

Missouri Town 1855 is located on 30
picturesque acres in Fleming Park.
(link below has an enlarged map, our
location marked by the red circle)
Teresa and her husband Dave have been setting
up their encampment on the lawn of the 1842
Squires house for 13 years running.  The 1840
hand-hewn log summer kitchen is located out back.
  The Squires barn.
Sorghum making.
Mountain men encampment.
Ayrshire Oxen.  This fellow spent a
lot of time at the fence near us. Who
knew Cinders could imitate the
oxen mating call?
Dave made stew while the ladies
set up the goodies for sale.
 Mmmm good!
Teresa had root beer, apples, pickles, baked
goods and penny candy......jars and jars of candy.
From Boston baked beans to salt water taffy &
everything in between.  We weighed it out by the 1/4 lb.
on antique scales & put it in little brown paper bags.
It was a busy 2 days of restocking, weighing &
 mental ciphering!!
I set up my dolls in an old apple box & Robin
brought crochet items, soaps, pottery & herbs.
Her delicious homemade lavender shortbread
cookies sold out daily by noon.  I purchased
a couple little bags of lavender with her
recipe....I can't wait to make some.
By Sunday afternoon everything
was about gone.  To my delight the
dollies sold like hotcakes.
Dave kept the crowds entertained as
the traveling doctor/dentist.  He had an
assortment of gruesome dental and surgical
tools (a few body parts too) & just as gruesome
& amusing stories.  Gee, I wish we could visit
the dentist & pay with chickens!

Teresa's children & all 10 grand children dropped
 by for a visit......she beamed all week-end.
Although it's fun to dress up and pretend to
live in 1855, at the end of the day, we headed to the
hotel for a hot shower, a soft bed and lots of "hen" talk.
Teresa, me, Cinders & Robin.

Thank you Teresa & Robin for
 the wonderful photos.
(I was having too much fun to get my camera out!)

  1. What a great place. the house and grounds are beautiful. All the food, dolls and candies look wonderful. Your dolls are beautiful and it is no surprise that they were snapped up fast. All four of you made a pretty picture. It is nice to do things like this with people you love.

    1. Cinders & I thought of you when we visited the mountain men encampment. Lots of beautiful Indian beading etc. I wish I could have purchased some fresh sorghum, but they were not allowed to sell it. The government says had to be inspected.....dang it!

  5. I just knew your dolls would "go like hot cakes"! Some people are very fortunate to own one now.
I grew up with sorghum making; that's how we made our living in the '40s. Must be wonderful to have such good friends!

  6. I always enjoy watching the sorghum making. I really wanted to bring some home, they were selling jars of sorghum you can buy at the store. The good ole' government doesn't want us to be poisoned by fresh sorghum!!. Most of the old timers around here in the Ozarks grew up making it too and I would have loved to bring my step dad some fresh sorghum for his biscuits.

    1. It is a great place to visit when they have special events. It's also a school field trip for the local schools.
