Annual Girlfriends' Weekend

I hosted the annual girlfriends' get
together last weekend.
Sadly, our time together was too short, but filled
with much laughter & plenty of girl talk.  We visited the
Rose O'Neill homestead and Kewpie museum,
(a future post)

  & the local moonshine distillery.
  We had a campfire cookout & marshmallow roast, as well as
our little gift exchange.  I gave each of the girls a little
 quilt and a couple of embroidered tea towels.

Teresa brought Cindy (our quilter) a farm auction
find.  It's a hand sewn quilt top, with batting and a muslin
backing basted together, ready to be quilted.  It has
the most beautiful fabrics.  We think it dates from
around the 1930's and 40's.  It's condition is amazing.
 It's in the flower garden pattern.
 I love this "Three Little Pigs fabric".

Aren't they wonderful?  We wondered about the history
of this quilt top.  What was the lady like that made these
blocks?  Why was it left unfinished?  Why wouldn't
someone from her family keep this treasure?   Her stitches
 are so fine and the corners are so precise.  So much
fun to speculate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I can't wait to see Cindy's hand quilting on the finished quilt.
Teresa brought me an entire cooler filled with pork
from their farm raised hog and frozen veggies from
her garden ................mmmmm good!
Cinder brought me some Kewpie post cards,
I LOVE postcards & Kewpies!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
As a topic for discussion, Teresa brought some other
 goodies from the same box she purchased at the auction.
  Hand stitched blocks in a pattern we are unfamiliar with.
and these blocks, paper pieced in a crazy quilt pattern.
Each block is made up of 4 smaller squares.
The colors are predominately blues and browns.
Perhaps it was going to be a quilt for a gentleman.
The original paper pieces were still attached to the back.
We spent one evening just reading the backs.
Newspapers, book pages and sheet music were used.
Dates ranged from 1913 to 1916.
Springfield, Kansas City and St. Louis, Missouri
newspapers were used.
An interesting window into the history of our state.
The box was purchased for the grand price of $7.00!

We had great time............
I already miss them, girlfriends are good for the soul.
Can't wait till next year!!

  3. What a fun time you girls seemed to have! The little quilt and tea towels you gave are just wonderful looking! The quilt top is so pretty and just like you, I wonder why when the stitcher put so much work in putting it together was it not finished. Could the first blocks be called butter churn.........or something like that?? Love the old newspapers on the back!Sweet post!

  4. I looked up butter churn, it looks very similar, but put together in a different way. Perhaps the lady was creative!

  5. I'm so glad you had a great time with your friends. It sounded like the perfect weekend. all the quilts were pretty. things are so different now, it is so interesting to read papers about everyday living back 50 or 60 years. I know how much things have changed since I was 10 years old.
