Sunbonnet Sue With A Modern Twist
Sunbonnet Sue is a childhood favorite of mine, I remember seeing her pictures in books, embroidered on tea towels, & appliqued on quilts. Bertha Corbett Melcher is credited as a creator of the Sunbonnet designs. She illustrated children's Primer books in the early 1900s. Her book, "The Sunbonnet Babies" was published in 1900. In this book she depicted girls with their faces hidden by their bonnets.
I recently finished this appliqued Sunbonnet Calendar Quilt adapted from a pattern in Patchwork Quilting, August 05. (It took me a long time to finish!) My Mother kindly let me raid her button box for some wonderful old buttons. Buttons from my Girl Scout uniform are on the March bonnet, and many of the others are from childhood dresses.

I chose fabric by Mary Engelbreit for the back. I love her colorful designs.
